Deliverance

Between 1976 and 1979, Deliverance made four albums. They were published by a variety of labels:

1976 – To God Be The Glory – ImageVII/Word Records

1977 – Give It A Try – Blue Rose Productions GmbH

1978 – Lasting Impressions – WEA Musik GmbH, WEA Canada & Atlantic Records

1979 – Tightrope – Global Records & Tapes & Attic Records

This website intends to highlight the music of Deliverance, the environment from which it evolved, and its legacy which continues on to this day.

Hey, Daryl. Wondering if you are still getting mail at this address. It’s the only one I seem to be able to locate to try to get to you. I have been on another webpage of yours trying to get the music there to play and then, when it wouldn’t, trying to download the songs, as you advise. Also not functioning. Can you give me some help with this? I am looking for music by the Janz team quartet / Janz team Singers, English or German or whatever. I have a Southern Gospel radio program here in Quebec City every Saturday and would like to use some of their music for airplay. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Interesting to find this. I’m the wife of Dave McSparran, aka David Raven, drummer on Tightrope. I’ll be with Paul and Beth Janz in the UK in a couple of weeks. David or I could probably answer some questions, as we’ve kept up with everyone to some extent. David is the only one that has remained active as a musician, having recorded about 1500 albums, writes music for film and television (currently songs on Sons of Anarchy and Parks and Recreation)and has a new album being released in a couple of months with his own band, Mojo Monkeys (New Orleans R&B). He has played with everyone from Keith Richards to Iggy Pop, Nora Jones, Bruce Springstein, Mike Ness of Social Distortion. Tomorrow night he opens for Lynyrd Skynryd in LA (where we live). He has played on Matt Redman’s and Fernando Ortega’s albums. He plays, writes, sings and produces. -Rebecca Ver Straten-McSparran on Ken and Paul Janz 1987

I believe there is one song on YouTube from that demo disc. I will find it and post it here. I think Janz Team sees their music as a ministry, not a business. So it’s not advertised, and it’s sold mainly through live concerts and conferences. Daryl Thanks so much for this stuff. I think for the majority of us, this stuff is very rare, and beyond the scope of most people ever attaining. Even the National Archives of Canada doesn’t hold much Janz information – odd, when you consider that Paul was a huge Canadian musical icon. Now I’m just waiting to find someone with a copy of Paul’s “Songwriter” album – which was never released commercially, but used to demonstrate Paul’s work to potential employers (would that be the word you’d use in the ad industry?). Someone out there must have an old copy lying around – I hope they all haven’t been tossed in landfills. Michelle on “Rarities and b-sides”

Thanks for the clarification. I have never heard of the Bluegrass group called Deliverance. After all that, they still remained in obscurity. Pity. No doubt their money hungry lawyers cleaned them out. And I wasn’t aware that the Heavy Metal band called Deliverance was ‘Christian’. I sort of doubt that, but anything is possible I guess. on “New” Deliverance Song

…and this remixed Album “Tightrope” with some new Songs including “Last Road to Forever” was finished one day before the Masterband should be given to CBS in New York. But on that sad Day,Deliverance was at the End – because of another group called Deliverance, which was an Bluegrass-Groupe.It was not the christian-metal band Deliverance which brought Deliverance to fall,it was the Bluegrass Group which was “born” in 1972. Hi Daryl, the Song “Mirror” is on b-side of the 1981 JANZ – Single “Steine” (Eurovision-Song).Mirror was written by Paul & Ken Janz. Hi Rick, thanks for leaving a note! My biggest fear is that if Ken and Paul find this site they’ll be legally obligated to tell me to take it down. Daryl, ‘Remastered’ means having digitally recorded in hq stereo on PC using CoolEdit, and digitally removing all record scratches, deleting noise and optimising amplitudes etc. Record speed of 33rpm was actually the more difficult to control. Hope you don’t mind I used your 4-record picture for some songs. Could you maybe ask around for a picture of the LP cover of the songs Mirror, Love is the Answer, and Road to Forever? Hi Just came across your site by accident! I used to work with a band that toured in Holland a number of times in the early 80s and on one trip picked a copy of ‘Tightrope’. What a great album – I transferred it to CD some years back and still listen to it. I also have a Paul Janz solo CD I found in a bargain bin in Amsterdam last year! I’d love to hear some of the earlier music, especially ‘Lasting Impressions’ but the mp3 links don’t seem to work. If that’s fixable or you can point me to another source I’d appreciate it. I’m a HUGE Paul Janz fan – but had never heard of Deliverance until now. I would be so interested in hearing Paul’s early music – and seeing how much of his Deliverance work is reflected in the music he recorded solo in the 1980s and 90s.I’m so disappointed Paul stopped recording in the 1990s – I think he was an amazing singer / writer – although the work he’s now doing teaching and writing at Kings College is certainly important.I would love to hear from anyone who could lead me to any of the Deliverance songs! Hi there. I came across lastingimpression.blogspot.com recently and was catapulted back through time. My parents have a Janz Team Singers album (LP) and my dad has (had?)an old Jack Stenekes cassette that I used to listen to. The short answer… I went to BFA when Deliverance was in their heyday. For the long answer, read the blog. I think I outlined it pretty well.Vern G was the fantastic Guitar player right? Where are you located now? From 1978-1980 My parents, John and Sara were dorm parents at the Jr. high girls dorm, then at Gupf. I suspect all of Deliverance, therefore your parents went to the same church as the rest of us. I know Paul, Ken and Danny (Daniel) Janz did.I have a few more albums to record and post, but if Danny is still doing covers of the old songs, I might be forced to remove them.I DID burn copies of my recordings onto CD, but it takes so long to edit the copies to get rid of the pops and clicks, that I gave up for a while. I intend to get back to it soon.If you have ALL the albums maybe you can help me… I’m looking for the North American version of Tightrope. Well, what more can I say? I had access to all the albums when I lived in Germany and I know that the German albums, with their disco-y saxophones, were exactly the same as the record albums I later bought when I came back to Canada. The problem is that the Radio version was not the same as the vinyl you could buy in the record shop. I imagine the radio version was a specially re-recorded white cover version with guitars replacing the disco sounding saxophone versions. In Canada in the early 80’s there was a heavy backlash against disco, so I believe the guitar version had more appeal. Now I just have to find a copy. on Tightrope Radio Mix

I have a vinyl copy of the Tightrope album that never gets played these days due to there being no turntable at home, but like you I became very frustrated at the lack of information on the band. I saw them perform live at the Greenbelt festival, around 1979 or 1980 I guess. The performance was great, with the most memorable thing being that one of the band was actually singing a harmony part from behind the sound desk 50 metres from the stage! Rob, thanks for your comments regarding Deliverance. You’re right that the fourth (first actually) album was called “To God Be The Glory”. “Hymns” was my long-time impression (I only saw the album once, when I was about 16). A friend of mine just found a copy for me and gave me the real title. I thought I had corrected that on the website, but apparently not. I was looking forward to the first comments from a real fan, since that is the only way we can all learn more about how big Deliverance really was. If you had access to their records at the radio station, did you have the real North American version of Tightrope? The one with the heavy guitars instead of the light airy saxes? I have been looking for that for years. I don’t know if it was a white cover album or what, but a real copy of that would be wonderful. I am going to rip my 20 year old cassette tape of tha version, but it was recorded through a clock-radio and a handheld mike, so the quality is terrible! Keep your eyes on Ken and Paul Janz 1987

A website for the band Deliverance is long overdue. I was one of the music directors for the first full time Christian Rock station on the planet, WINQ, in Florida back in the 70s. When the Deliverance album “Give It A Try” came out, we started playing the title cut and it went to the top of our charts. The song stayed there for months. While traveling in Canada a couple of years later, I was in a record store and found “Lasting Impressions” which became my favorite album of the day (my wife’s too). I would love to have all of their albums on CD but I guess that will never happen. Most CCM albums from that era will never be released on CD. Oh, one other thing. I keep reading that Deliverance released three albums under that name. And your admendment here adds that another album Hymns was released. That’s a new one on me. But there was still another album by Deliverance. This may be the same as the Hymns album, but it was called “To God Be The Glory” and was released in 1976 on on Ken and Paul Janz 1987

Janz Team’s Twilight Years

As the Janz Team fades from view, I had an opportunity to visit the last torchbearers for the Janz Team – Bob & DeEtta Janz. They told me that Black Forest Academy runs the show now, with their Teach Beyond ministry. The Janz Team as such no longer exists. The offices are empty, the tapes are destroyed, the people have moved on. Bob & DeEtta’s ministry includes leading local bible studies, creating their own CD’s and reissuing Janz team music, copied from sources other than original tapes, and given away as donation-ware. They told me stories of people emptying out their closets, and wondering what to do with their old Janz team music (give it to me), and honestly believing that no one out there would be interested in this old stuff (give it to me!), meanwhile, here at LastingImpression, I get many requests for the old gospel music that played such a big part of baby boomers’ lives (GIVE IT TO ME!!!). Anyways, here’s a Dropbox link to the four CD’s they shared with me: After Janz Team. These albums are not available anywhere else.
